Achille Castiglioni (1918-2002)
Achille Castiglioni was a famous designer known for using ordinary materials in his work. He found his inspiration in everyday things. After studying architecture at Politecnico di Milano, he opened up and office with his brothers in 1944. They were later know as the Castiglioni brothers team and were revered for their modern designs. Some of the most famous pieces designed by the Castiglioni brothers were the tractor seat stool, Mezzadro and the Sella chair designed using a bicycle seat. Their designs transcended just furniture. They also designed the Spalter vacuum cleaner and many lamps including the Luminator, Bulb, Arco, Snoopy, and Toio. Another notable design was the RR126 stereo. The knobs and speakers were designed to look like a face of a musical pet.
Castiglioni also taught at the Politecnico of Turin University and at the faculty of Architecture at Politecnico di Milano University. Castiglioni’s designs have been exhibited at the Milan Triennial since 1947 and he has received several Compasso d'Oro awards. Many of Castilglioni's products are considered classics and are still in production.
