Eero Aarnio

Eero Aarnio Eero Aarnio (1932-)

Eero Aarnio is a Finnish furniture and interior designer. After studying at the Helsinki Institute of Industrial Arts, he opened his own firm and began creating his unique furniture designs. Some of these designs include: the Screw Table, designed to look like a screw partly driven into the floor; the Ball Chair, which looked like a ball on a stand with an opening for someone to sit inside; the Bubble Chair, similar to the Ball chair but suspended from above and made of clear plastic; the Pastil Chair; and the Tomato Chair.

While Aarnio used all types of material in his furniture, his most famous pieces were usually made primarily of plastic and fiberglass. These 1960s designs, with their bright colors and geometric shapes, were often described as looking futuristic. As a result, some of them were featured in science fiction movies of the time. While Aarnio is still working and creating new pieces and designs, most associate him with these retro designs.
