Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964)
Gerrit Rietveld was a Dutch furniture designer and architect. While studying architecture and design, Rietveld open a furniture factory in 1911. He finished his studies in 1919. Many of his architectural and furniture designs have become quite well known. Among his most famous designs is the asymmetrical Rietveld Schröder House for Truus Schröder-Schräder which he designed in 1924. His furniture designs are equally revered. In 1917 he designed the Red and Blue Chair. Shortly thereafter he became influenced by the 'De Stijl' movement and became a member in 1919. In 1928 Rietveld left the 'De Stijl' movement and joined the Nieuwe Zakelijkheid and the Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne. Other famous designs his "Zig-Zag" chair in 1934 and some of the design of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
