Entertainment centers and TV stands with multiple, built-in functions were very popular in the middle to late 1970's. Most of them were constructed of beautiful wood design and incorporated a radio, record player that could accommodate a record player and a television. Most had hide-away doors increasing its functionality as a console table. The problem with these entertainment centers became obvious. If the radio malfunctioned, or the TV or other parts became obsolete, the multi-functional entertainment center, usually as large as 45 to 60 inches in width used floor space better served for other purposes.

Today's Modern Entertainment Centers

Modern entertainment centers are now much more diverse in terms of size and width as well as functionality. Contemporary entertainment centers are still beautiful pieces of furniture. The difference is that radio, TV, DVD players and sound systems are separately purchased. Many modern entertainment centers can be 6 feet high and 6 feet wide and require a full wall space for location. Others may fit into a corner quite conveniently. Others are smaller in width and height and have storage space for video and audio disks as well as several video and audio components. Modern entertainment centers also are designed in brass, wood and corrugated woods. Some have metal, wood or glass shelving and hide-away doors. Now, modern entertainment centers incorporate all components into one convenient space and take up much less floor space as well. Styles vary by taste from modern to antique. Having additional storage space in one location offers a neater, more organized appearance. Contemporary entertainment centers have become a central focal point in most living rooms and recreation rooms. It's important to know measurements of components before purchasing a modern entertainment center, particularly to accommodate HDTV and Plasma large screen TVs.
