Philippe Starck (1949-)
Philippe Patrick Starck studied at Ecole Nissim de Camondo in Paris and opened his own design firm in the late 1960s. He worked with Pierre Cardin as director of art. In the 1970s his interior designs of a few Paris nightclubs gained him some notoriety. In 1982 he was chosen to do the interior design for one of the apartments of the French President François Mitterrand. Soon after he was asked to design the interiors for the Café Costes, Paris, the Paramount hotel in New York City, the Royalton Hotel on New York’s East 44th Street, the Mondrian in L.A., and the Delano in Miami.
He also began to design the furniture he used in his interior designs. Among some of his most famous furniture designs are the Emeco Hudson chair and counter stool, the Navy chair and barstool, the Louis Ghost chair, the Bubble Club sofa, and the La Boheme stool. In addition to furniture, Starck designed a line of household items and utensils such as juicers, toothbrushes, and even an optical mouse for Microsoft. He is known for using different materials that would seem unexpected but the combinations are what make his designs unique and coveted.
