Stefano Giovannoni was born in La Spezia. He studied architecture at Florence University and graduated in 1978. In 1979 he began teaching and doing research at his alma matre as well as at the Domus Academy in Milan and at the Università del Progetto in Reggio Emilia. Giovannoni now works and lives in Milan. He is an industrial designer, an interior designer and an architect. During the 1980s, he founded the King Kong studio with Guido Venturini. Some of the companies they collaborated with include Alessi, Flos, Magis, Fiat, Seiko, Pulsar, Cappellini, Kankyo, and Saab.

Stefano Giovannoni has won several awards and accolades for his designs. He won first place in the Schinchenchiku Residential Design Competition in 1980, and the Competition for a square at Santa Croce sull’Arno in 1980 to name a few. Some of his most notable designs include his Girotondo line which contains household appliances and items which feature a stickman pictogram. He designed the Fruit Mama fruit bowl, the Mary Biscuit cookie jar, and a line of kitchenware called Mami. Perhaps one of his most famous designs is the Bombo stool which is a contemporary brightly colored bar stool.
