Verner Panton (1926-1998)
Verner Panton (1926 - 1998) was a famous and influential Danish furniture and interior designer. Known for his modern and futuristic designs, Panton often used bright colors in a variety of materials. Many of his designs have transcended time and remain in production today.
Panton was trained as an architectural engineer in Odense. He studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen and graduated in 1951. Panton began his career working at the architectural firm of Arne Jacobsen, another famous, Danish architect and furniture designer. Panton quickly started his own design and architectural firm. Some of his most innovative architectural proposals include a collapsible house, the Cardboard House, and the Plastic House. His furniture designs were equally unconventional and innovative. Perhaps one of his most famous pieces is the Stacking chair or the S chair.
Panton’s interior designs were also futuristic. He combined his furniture designs, wall upholstery, textiles and lighting to achieve his psychedelic vision. Many know him for his design of a German boat’s interior which has been converted into a famous museum. He is also known for a hotel in Europe where he used circular patterns and furniture.
